A spending maximum.

Set a weekly food budget and grocery budget and set a maximum spending limit on your food and groceries.
Before you leave your house for the supermarket, inventory your food, groceries and dry goods in your refrigerator, freezer and pantry. Think of the meals you can make based on the food and groceries you have on hand. Especially fruits and vegetables that tend to spoil quickly.
Plan your meals for the week.
Design your meals for the week based on the food and groceries you have on hand – in your pantry, refrigerator and freezer.
The point is to consume your food and groceries Before they spoil or get freezer burn.
I’m a Big Fan of Leftovers. But you may not be. . .
Give leftovers a whirl.
You already paid for the food in your pantry, refrigerator and freezer. And your leftovers.
The financial industry calls items you already paid for and investments you’ve already made ‘Sunk Costs’.
Groceries you’ve already purchased equal ‘free food’. Because if you eat the food in your pantry or refrigerator or eat leftovers, you’re Not spending money on more food and groceries. This saves you money, saves cash.
