The Most Valuable Asset Ever! (Part 1)

It was a long Time coming; and finally my eX and I agreed to separate.
I left the marital residence and moved across town to a small rental house to stay near the children.
Even though my eX and I weren’t a good match and wanted to divorce, I was down in the dumps.
Moving from a house of five to a house of one was rough. So Quiet! I was Sad. I missed my children terribly.
As a people person and connector, I was lonely. . . I craved interaction with other people.
And remember, the divorce was 2007, long before Zoom, Teams and their cousins.
At the time, I worked from home most of the time, long before remote working and hybrid working were a thing.
In order to stay connected and interact with people directly – live in person – I used to run errands. Even when the errands weren’t really necessary or time-sensitive.
For example, I took what I thought was 10 minutes to drive down the block to my Post Office Box. Several Days a Week.
Well I thought it took 10 minutes.
Truth be told, I didn’t receive that much mail. And as you can probably relate, Only a very small percentage of snail mail is useful in the first place.
I was under the impression that going to the Post Office took 10 minutes since it was Only 1.2 miles down the block from my house.

Nonsense. Complete Baloney:
First, I had to gather my things, leave the house and get in my car
Drive the 1.2 miles into town; possibly stop at the red light at the bottom of the hill
Park – and with all the SUVs bouncing around, parallel parking was no picnic
Walk to the Post Office
Grab the mail and sort it
Talk to an employee or two now and again
Chat with a neighbor or two who I happened to bump into
Walk next door to Eddie’s Seafood. . . and catch up with Eddie for a couple of minutes . And. . .
Buy an iced coffee or iced tea which often required waiting in line and. . .
Add milk to the coffee, open the straw and stir
Walk back to the car
Drive home, etc.
Settle back in at my desk. And. . .
Figure out where I left off and reenter work mode.
Ten Minutes? Not a chance!
I never bothered to calculate the actual total time I spent on these seemingly ‘quick’ excursions, But I figure it was at least 20 minutes if not 30 all in.
Plus the Loss of Momentum during the Workday.
And let’s not talk about my trips to the dry cleaner. . .
My corporate attire was T-shirt and shorts – hardly any need for dry cleaning, absent a client meeting!
And remember, this was long before COVID and Zoom and Microsoft Teams, which probably call for a more professional dress code. Teleconference calls were all the rage back then.
But somehow I found my way to the dry cleaners twice a week.
I became very good acquaintances with Tony and Patti – very nice people. But. . .
If we want to look at time management and peak productivity, talking with Tony and Patti was NOT the most productive use of my time during the workday and workweek.
Despite their providing some human interaction and connectivity.
In fact, one day, I had to cancel a date because I was running up against a deadline on a client project, in part because I had left my home office to run some errands. Hmmm. . .
Suddenly, it hit me how little time we have and how precious time really is.
Next week, we’ll share 14 questions that will help you get a handle on how you use your time, how you can save time and increase your productivity. And double you salary!
Until then, watch your clock. And mind your time!
