Three Great Parenting Insights! – ’The Life List’

A few weeks ago, I got bored with watching ‘Kojak’, the 1970s popular police detective show set in New York City, on Amazon Prime, so I clicked over to Netflix and the movie ‘The Life List’ caught my eye.

As you may have guessed by now, this is a feel-good, heartfelt, emotional romance story starring Sofia Carson (who plays Alex Rose) and Kyle Allen.

The movie stars Connie Britton, who plays Alex’s mom. At the beginning of the movie, Britton dies and leaves Sofia a list of tasks to do – tasks that are from Sofia’s list of her childhood aspirations, which she penned when she was 13 years old.

No worries – this is not a ‘spoiler’. So, no spoiler alert is required.

Before I get to the movie and what it meant to me, I have to reveal a couple of things about my parents and my childhood.

My Dad, G-d rest his soul, was super tough on my brother and me. He never spanked us but he sure did yell a whole bunch. I’m not exactly sure why but I guess he was uptight and stressed. Because of his upbringing, for whatever reason he became a control freak (but that’s not an excuse).

He told me to pursue a career in accounting and finance. Which has worked out well for me, but I didn’t feel like I really had a choice.

My Mom (G-d rest her soul)?

Unfortunately, she had a challenging childhood, although different from my Dad. Her mom got sick when she was 8 or 9 and my mom lived with various relatives, even though her Dad was alive. I never got the complete story. Sadly, life was often cloudy for her.

Just before I was going off to college, Mom said, “Don’t worry if you don’t do that well. There are a lot of smart people there.”

Thanks a lot!

But that line stuck with me for a long time. . . and for some time, I carried those messages with me and was not a peak performer like I am today. I did not live up to my potential! But I am today.

So, back to the movie The Life List, Connie Britton reveals three key questions to help you decide if a potential mate is right for you.

Here are three of them:

  1. Does he/she help me become the best version of myself?

  2. Can I tell him/her everything in my heart?

  3. Can I tell him/her everything in my heart?

Let’s tilt these questions to good parenting:

  1. Do you help your children become the best version of themselves?

  2. Do you encourage your children to speak up, no matter what your children may tell you? Is it a ‘safe environment’ for your children to speak up?

  3. Can your children tell you everything in their heart, freely, freely without pushback or fear of being criticized?

See you next week.
