In the late 1990s when I was a Vice President at Citibank, I financed four Boeing 737 aircraft in Japan for United Parcel Service (UPS). A fascinating and great learning experience.
Frank, the Treasurer of UPS, and I met in Tokyo to meet with some Japanese bankers.
Bruce was the Citibank relationship banker who covered UPS. But he stayed back in the USA.
One morning, Frank and I were walking down the street in Tokyo to head to a meeting and he said:
“When Bruce calls, we Always take the meeting. We don’t always buy but we Always want to hear what he has to say.
He always presents ideas that he thinks will add value to our company and save us money or he shares something that we should be aware of.
Bruce’s presentations are well thought out and his team members are very knowledgeable. We don’t always buy but we Always want to hear what he has to say.”

If we take a step back and think about it for a moment:
Time is our most valuable asset because once a minute passes, it’s gone, gone forever. We can never get that minute back.
Therefore, we need to guard our time with our life and. . . Protect other people’s time. Because time is gold!
People seek value and rock-solid, accurate information and solutions to their problems.
What’s more, today more than ever it’s impossible to know everything. Because the world has become so specialized. We have to rely on others to teach us about subjects we don’t know and to provide expertise in areas where we lack expertise.
Seek to surround yourself with experts who can enhance your team and provide the missing expertise, the missing information and the missing links.
Frank is saying that Bruce and his team provide valuable information and solutions to problems so they Want to listen.
Do people Want to listen to you. . .
How can you become a master of your craft?
How can you provide value – to your employer? To your customers? To your friends and family? To people who rely on you?
And if you are not in a position to add value, how can you provide accurate information or offer a viable solution?
Do you have the confidence to admit that you don’t know and the conviction to bring in someone that could add value?
How can you position yourself to add value all the time, every time?
When you follow these 12 guidelines, you will develop a reputation as someone that other people should listen to and more important seek out; and someone they can rely on, all the time, every time!
